You love your air fryer and use it often, but now it's getting dirty, a little smoky, and negatively affecting your air fryer mojo. Before making another batch of air fryer chips, it's time to clean your unit. After writing two air fryer cookbooks, I've learned a thing or two about how to keep my air fryer in tip-top shape. Here's how I keep my air fryer clean and tidy.

First, let's review the anatomy of an air fryer

Air fryers are countertop appliances. They are typically 12 to 18 inches tall and 12 to 14 inches wide. Inside the unit is a heating element and a powerful fan that circulates the heat. Food is placed in a hanging basket with holes that allow hot air to circulate and cook from all sides. This setup is great for quick, even cooking - crispy fries are fantastic - but the design also means that there are a few places for food particles to drip into the bottom pan that you really want to keep clean.

How to clean an air fryer

Various air fryer brands and models have slightly different configurations, but the basic cleaning regimen is the same. IMPORTANT: The main unit contains electrical components and should not be submerged in water. 1. Clean the Air Fryer Immediately After Use

After use, turn off the machine, unplug it and allow it to cool. Don't wait until later to clean it - the goo will just stick to it.

2. Wipe baskets and pans with soapy water

Removable inner baskets and pans should be pulled out, wiped clean and washed with warm soapy water.

3. For stubborn messes, soaking or basket and pan

Baskets and pans can be dipped into soapy water and soaked. Some brands of baskets and pans are dishwasher safe.

4. Wipe down the bottom chamber

The bottom chamber of your machine can be a bit tricky, but it's the most important part of keeping it clean. Breadcrumbs, grease residue and meat drippings can (and will) fall to the bottom of the chamber. After removing the basket and pan, wipe down the inside of the machine with a damp paper towel or clean rag and air dry.

5. Wiping the heating elements

The heating elements can be wiped down, but only after the machine has cooled completely. It is best to tilt or turn the machine over for easier handling.

6. Drying before reassembly

Allow parts to dry completely, reassemble and store.
